Managed Pressure Drilling
Providing MPD analysis, planning, and execution support independent of service or equipment provider.
WellSpec MPD Services
Meeting your targets
Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is an adaptive drilling process used to control the annular pressure profile in the wellbore. The objectives are to drill within the operational formation pressure window limits, enable challenging hole sections to be drilled to total depth, enhance down hole event detection and well control processes.
“ENSURING THE RIGHT TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE AND PROCEDURES ARE BEING USED FOR AN MPD DRILLING OPERATION IS CRITICAL. WELLSPEC PROVIDES ALL THE SERVICES TO ENSURE THAT MPD WELL OBJECTIVES CAN BE ACHIEVED.”
WellSpec are not an MPD equipment manufacturer or supplier and are not tied to specific MPD services or equipment vendors. This enables Well Spec to provide impartial support and expertise directly to Drilling Contractors and Operating Companies, allowing our clients to procure, install and operate MPD systems that are fit for purpose, safe, future proof and commercially effective.
– Equipment inspection and operational readiness
– Rig surveys and design
– MPD equipment installation
– Commissioning and testing assistance
– Compliance with standards and regulations
– MPD process design reviews
– MPD drilling program and procedure reviews
– MPD well control process reviews

With an experienced team of MPD Engineers, using the latest well control and transient hydraulics flow modelling software systems, we provide the complete well engineering scope required to design and execute managed pressure drilling operations, ensuring full compliance with current standards and regulations MPD basis of design:
– MPD Feasibility Studies and well candidate selection
– Detailed project FEED program development:
– Basis of MPD well design
– Hydraulics modelling studies
– Operational and contingency procedures
– Well control bridging documentation, matrix and procedures
– Project installation planning and drawings
– As built operational drawings
– Cause and effects matrix
– MPD Riser Analysis input
– QHSE process advice: FMECA / HAZID / HAZOP / DWOP / RA
We ensure drilling contractors and operators select MPD equipment that is correctly specified for the required operations. MPD equipment and rig interfaces must be installed with correctly rated and sized pipe work; minimizing surface pressure losses. Ensuring that all MPD operational requirements and procedures are covered is critical and using a team of experienced WellSpec MPD professionals ensures that this is done correctly the first time.
Coaching and supervision
Our experienced team of MPD engineers and supervisors are always ready to provide our clients’ drilling supervisors, drilling engineers and drilling superintendents with ongoing advice and support for managed pressure drilling operations both, in the office and on the rig-site.
As member of the ModuResources Group we provide full rig inspection services including inspection of MPD equipment already installed on rigs before commencing drilling operations, surveying new build and existing rigs for MPD system installations and MPD process design. Inspections are not only limited to MPD, but also include HPHT, PMCD, RGH and UBD inspections to ensure any land rig, jack up, mid water or deepwater floating rig is fully ready for complex well operations.
With the Well Academy and WellTrain as part of our group, all aspects of MPD training are provided worldwide. From basic introduction and development for the entire project team, to advanced well-specific immersive training. This covers a multitude of levels where hydraulics, various MPD techniques, surface and subsea equipment, dynamic MPD well control and MPD operations are covered. Simulator courses both with conventional rigs and with cyber systems are offered and training can be scenario-based to practice and ensure competence in MPD operations, using the specific details of the project wells to be drilled.
Wellsite based training and coaching are offered on both offshore and onshore rigs if required.
